The series

Field notes

A numbered series on how the office half of a small business actually behaves. Each one takes a single mechanism, puts it on screen, and hands over whatever tool falls out of it. There is no pitch in them and there never will be.

They are made this way on purpose. This audience is saturated with people selling systems, and reads the pitch itself as a warning. The only position left worth holding is the one that gives the thinking away and lets the arithmetic do the arguing.

There Is No Code

Owners assume the system is code, and code is a problem for a guy named Kyle. There is no code. None. We put the actual file on screen and let you read it.

The Untrained Hire

Anatomy of a Missed Call

Sandra answered the phone all day. The shop still missed calls. Both of those things are true, and the second one is not her fault.

The $65,000 Question

Every owner runs the math on an office hire, looks at the salary, and decides to wait one more season. The waiting has a price, and it is not zero.
